Written Comprehension

Jimmy Andrews is 13. He is an only child. 

He is quite shy and doesn’t have friends. His secret dream is to have a dog.

His parents are nice but their life isn’t easy: they are always busy and they often worry about everyday problems.

They love their son very much and want him to have a good job and a good life.

One morning, at breakfast, Jimmy suddenly says : “Dad, it’s my birthday next month, I’d like to have a dog.” 

His father looks at him, smiles, and says : “What a splendid idea!” 

Jimmy is so happy but his father adds : “Your mother can make you a nice one!”  

Make a dog? What does he mean? He understands his father isn’t really listening to him!

Jimmy is sad. He is dreaming about a dog, His dog! 

He looks at all the dogs he sees: in the streets, on TV, in books…

Day after day he imagines his dog. He calls him “Bruce”. He talks to him, plays with him, tells him everything…  

Jimmy’s parents are very happy when he asks “Can I go out and play with Bruce in the park?” because they think their son has got a new friend!

One evening, Jimmy is coming back from school when he sees a man, with a mask on his face, running out of the local bank.

The man points his gun at him. Jimmy is so terrified that he shouts “Bruce, Bruce, help! Attack, my dog, attack!” 

And then a big black dog comes at full speed, barking, showing its teeth.  It jumps on the thief and holds him! 

A few minutes later, policemen arrive, arrest the thief, and congratulate Jimmy and “his” dog! 

Jimmy’s parents are very proud and the dog becomes a member of the family. Jimmy is so happy! 

Thanks to Bruce, he meets people, he is less shy, and has got new friends. 

But his parents don’t understand why he calls his dog Bruce, just like his first friend!!!
