Written Comprehension

 

 

 

On the night of October 31st, all around the USA, witches, ghosts and skeletons walk silently in the night. 

Terrifying? Not at all! 

They are only people in costumes, celebrating Halloween, a very amusing holiday.

 

In fact, Halloween is an ancient celtic festival:

it is a time to remember the souls of the dead before November 1st which is All Saints' Day.

 

 

 

 

 

Nowadays, children go from house to house, dressed up as little monsters, asking for sweets or money and saying "trick or treat". They mean that if people don't give them anything they will play a trick on them!

They carry a jack o'lantern : a face carved in a big pumpkin with a lighted candle inside.

 

 

 

As for grown-ups, they organise parties. Their houses are decorated in orange and black (the two colours for Halloween) and they have to terrify their guests by hanging spiders, skulls, and bats everywhere.

 

For dinner, people have pumpkin soups and pumpkin pies!
