  5. The werewolves

The werewolves

A little village has been infiltrated by werewolves!

Each night, murders are committed.

It's time to take control before the town loses its last inhabitants.

The werewolves is a roleplay game.

Aim of the game:

For the villagers: to kill all of the werewolves

For the werewolves: to kill all of the villagers

The main characters

The Narrator

The Narrator animates the game. It is the most important role in the game.

It is their job to create a strong atmosphere to make the game truly enjoyable.

The Werewolves

Each night, the werewolves devour one or more villagers

During the day, they try to conceal their identity.

According to the number of players, there can be 1, 2, 3 or 4 werewolves.

The Villagers

Each night, one of them is killed by the werewolves.

The next morning, the survivors try to guess who the werewolves are.

There are around 4 villagers for one werewolf.

In the morning, survivors try to discover who the Werewolves are.

After discussing and debating, the villagers vote to lynch a suspect, who is eliminated from the game.

If it's a Werewolf, they are very happy but if it's one of them, they feel bad!

Then, an other night begins!

This video explains these basic rules.

Additional characters

When there are 5 players or more, you can use some additional characters:

The Fortune teller or Seer

Each night, the fortune teller can see the true personality of one player. The narrator shows the fortune teller the card of the player they want to see.

During the day, the fortune teller tries to help the other villagers to identify the werewolves.

The Hunter

If the hunter is killed by the werewolves, or lynched by the villagers, they can shoot and eliminate any other player.

The Witch

This player can make two very powerful potions:

- the first is a healing potion, which can be used to resurrect a player that is killed by a werewolf.

- the second is a poison, used to eliminate one player.

Each potion can only be used once per game, during the night.

Cupid

The player who receives the Cupid card chooses who the Lovers will be: the player themselves and another player or 2 other players of their choice.

The narrator touches the shoulders of the 2 chosen Lovers to have them discover each others.

They will have only one goal: survive together and kill all the others.

The little girl or Peeping Lily

The Little Girl is very curious. She can open her eyes at night to spy on the werewolves.

However, if she is caught by the werewolves, she dies instead of the designated victim.

The Mayor

Just like a real mayor, this player is elected by a vote of the villagers.

This player’s vote counts as 2 votes. If the mayor is eliminated, they name a successor.

The Thief

If the thief is used, two additional ordinary villager cards are added to the deck at the beginning of the game.

After the cards are shuffled and dealt, the two extra cards are placed face down in the center of the table.

During the preliminary turn of the first night, the thief looks at these two cards, and may trade their card with one of these two cards.

However, if both cards are werewolves, the thief must trade their card with one of them.

If the thief takes one of the extra cards, they assume the role of this new character for the rest of the game.

Creating the deck of cards

If you don’t have the cards yet, start creating them.

You need thick colored shits of paper.

Cut 20 8x8cm cards.

Create 8 Villagers cards, 4 Werewolves, 1 Cupid, 1 Mayor, 1 Fortune Teller or Seer, 1 Witch, 1 Hunter

1 Pipping Lily, 1 Thief

Decorate the front of the cards with a drawing of the charaters and write Werewolves or any other title on the back.

Before the 1st game, read the script and make sure you understand the prompts.

Playing Werewolves

  • Narrator dealing the cards face down. Everybody looks at their card without showing it to anyone !
  • (If there is the thief, they wait until everybody closes their eyes to look at the 2 extra cards and exchange them if they choose to.)

Narrator: “Night has fallen over the village, the moon is full. Everyone falls asleep. (Make a pause if there is the Thief). Cupid, open your eyes! Who do you want to become lovers?

  • Cupid pointing at the lovers

Narrator: “Ok. Cupid, go back to sleep. Now, I’m going to touch the lovers and they will open their eyes and recognize each other.”

Narrator touching the lovers’ heads or shoulders

  • Lovers opening their eyes and going back to sleep.

Narrator: “Seer/ Fortune Teller, open your eyes. Seer, pick someone you want to know who they are”.

  • Seer pointing at someone.

Narrator going to the player pointed at and showing their card. Narrator can bluff whose card they are showing by fumbling with other cards.

Narrator: “Seer, go back to sleep. Werewolves, open your eyes and look at each other. Choose someone to kill.

  • Pipping Lily trying to see who the werewolves are but being very careful not to be seen pipping at them.
  • Werewolves opening their eyes, recognising each other and pointing at a victim.

Narrator pointing at the victim to make sure they understand who the werewolves really want to kill.

Narrator: “Werewolves, close your eyes. Witch, open your eyes. This person was killed tonight. What do you want to do? Heal them (show a thumb up), do nothing (show a horizontalthumb) or kill someone else (show a thumb down) ?

  • Witch using the thumb code to heal, do nothing or kill someone else.

Narrator: “Ok, go back to sleep Witch. Everybody opens their eyes; it's now daytime.

On the 1st day, let’s introduce everyone!”

(For example, "Hey, I'm Matt. I'm the baker here in town, and I'm a Villager." Of course, everybody can cheat!)

Narrator: “Let’s elect the mayor. Who wants to be the Mayor. What do you want to do for the village?”

  • Players discuss who they want to be their mayor and vote.

Narrator: “So, ………… is the village Mayor.  During the night, someone/no one has been killed.

(Pointing at the player who was killed) It’s …………….    Show the village who you were!”

Players discuss who they think are the werewolves, telling the truth or lying to survive.

Narrator: “Now, let’s discuss who the village wants to kill……………………………………

Characters may choose to share or withhold information they've discovered.

Narrator: “So, who wants to kill this player? Who wants to kill this one…

Alright, so ………………… are dead. Reveal who you were.

So, night has fallen again over the village. Everyone falls asleep……”

The game finishes when all the villagers or all the werewolves are dead!
