The History of Edinburgh

The area around modern-day Edinburgh (start) to be inhabited thousands of years ago. 

The first inhabitants (settle) in the early Middle Ages and they (choose) to establish themselves on Castle Rock.

From the seventh to the tenth centuries it (be) part of the Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria.

After that, it (become) a royal residence for the Scottish kings. 

A town (develop) next to the stronghold in the early 12th century.

By the middle of the 14th century, it (take) the title of capital of Scotland. 

In the second half of the 18th century, Edinburgh (be) one of the most densely populated and dirty towns in Europe. The political leaders (decide) to expand north and southwards creating a new area known as the New Town north of Castle Rock. They also (vote) to create Princes Street gardens by draining Nor Loch, and giving Old Town a proper drainage systeme.

Edinburgh (be) Scotland's largest city until Glasgow (outgrow) it in the first two decades of the 19th century.

Today, a lot of tourists visit the capital of Scotland and it has a strong economic development.
