Sydney isn't the capital of Australia, but it is the largest and oldest city. It was also the home of the 2000 Olympic Games.

Sydney is a beautiful city with famous things to see, like the Royal Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and the surfers on Bondi Beach.

 

Olympic Events

More than 10,000 athletes and 200 countries took part in the new century's Olympics.

There werre 28 sports events including basketball, table tennis, football and tae kwon do. 

Bondi beach is the most famous beach in Australia and it's the place for beach volleyball matches.

The games begin when a runner lights the Olympic flame. This is a tradition from the first Olympic games in 776 BC.

 

 

  

 

Cover up!

The Olympics started on September 15th, and finished on October 1st.

This was spring in Australia, but this time of year is sometimes very hot. People watching the games had to protect themselves from the sun but they also had to take an umbrella because there was sometimes a lot of rain.

 

Olympic City facts: 

- The size of Sydney is 1,580 km. It's as big as London, and twice as big as New York.

- New-York and London have populations of seven million but only three million people live in Sydney.

- The Sydney Olympic stadium was the biggest Olympic stadium ever. It was big enough to hold four jumbo jets.

- Sydney is the sunniest city in Australia. There are usually only 23 days a year without sun.

- There are over 2,000 Aboriginal rock drawings in Sydney. The Aborigins are the first inhabitants : archeologists say they already were in Australia 50,000 years ago.

- 87 % of Australian people think that Sydney is the best city in the world.
