Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who died at the age of 99, was Queen Elizabeth’s husband for 73 years. 

He was born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark on June 10th, 1921 in Corfu, a Greek island. He was the only son and youngest child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg, one of Queen Victoria's descendant.

There was a revolution and his family had to leave the country when he was eighteen months old. 

As a child, he lived in France, Germany and the United Kingdom. He could speak the 3 languages very well.

He first met the young Princess Elizabeth in 1934. Both Philip and Elizabeth are great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria.

In 1939, he was 18, he joined the British Royal Navy and he started writing letters to Elizabeth at the beginning of the 2nd World War. 

At the end of the war he was on the destroyer HMS Whelp in the Pacific, and was in the Bay of Tokyo when Japan surrendered on September 2nd, 1945.

As a soldier, he has won a lot of military distinctions.

After the war, the King of England, George VI, allowed Philip  to marry Elizabeth: Philip decided to change his nationality and he became known as Philip Mountbatten. 

The royal wedding took place on November 20th, 1947.

Philip was made a Knight of the Garter, and given the title of "Royal Highness".

Philip and Elizabeth had 4 children together: Prince Charles in 1948 and Princess Anne in 1950.

On 6 February 1952, they were in Kenya when Elizabeth's father died and she became queen.

She was crowned on June 2nd 1953 and he became Prince Consort. He had to walk or stand 2 or 3 steps behind her all the time.

In February 1960, they had another baby boy, Andrew and finally Edward in March 1964.

The couple has also had eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

As consort to the Queen, Philip supported his wife in her new duties as sovereign, accompanying her to ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament in various countries, state dinners, Commonwealth Tours and State Visits.

He was the first member of the Royal Family to be interviewed on television, in May 1961. 

The Duke of Edinburgh has traveled with the Queen on all 251 of her royal trips.

He has been active in 992 organisations, either as President, Patron, Honorary Member ...

He was really interested in scientific and technological research, young people, education, the environment and the encouragement of sport.

Prince Phillip retired from royal duties at the end of 2017.

Philip was the patriarch of the British Royal family. 

In February 2021, Philip was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital  because he had an infection.

After a few weeks, he came back to Windsor where he died on the morning of April 9th 2021, two months before his 100th birthday. 

The Queen said her husband's death "left a huge void in her life".

The funeral took place on April 17th 2021 at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, and he was buried in the Royal Vault inside St George's.

Representatives of countries around the world sent condolences to the Royal Family upon his death.
